Locally-led Corrections Officer Basic Academy graduates first class

WILLISTON, N.D. (August 28, 2024): This month signifies the first time that the Williams County Sheriff’s Office was able to offer the Corrections Officers Basic Academy here at home in Williston. Previously, Corrections Deputies had to travel to other locations within the state to complete the Academy. Corrections Deputies are required to complete the Basic Academy and become certified through the state within their first year of employment at a Correctional Center, per standards set forth by the ND Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

It took several years of hard work to identify instructors and develop content to meet the Basic Academy’s curriculum requirements. Seven Williams County Corrections Deputies were part of the inaugural class. They completed 120 hours of coursework, which covered topics such as case law, legal liabilities, and de-escalation techniques. Correctional Center leadership plans to continue to offer the Academy locally in the future.
